Important Message to all area Moosup Pond Residents:

There is a petiton going around Moosup Pond regarding changing the ordinance that resistricts the size of boats and motors on Moosup Pond. Please DO NOT SIGN this petition.  Listed below are reasons why you should not sign:

  1. Safety- the useable area of the pond is just too small for large, fast boats and jet skis. There have been many reports of deaths, injuries and accidents this year of area lakes and ponds due to power boat and jet ski use.

  2. Ecology- Large motors in boats, specifically two stroke motors and jet skis pollute the water with gasoline and motor oil. Also, there have been lake and pond closures this year due to bacteria in the water, but not Moosup Pond , let's keep it that way.

  3. Quality of life- Since last Summer, the pond have been a quiet, serene place for all to enjoy and relax. There has been an increase in kayak, canoe, sailboat, long distance swimmer and beach use. I know of people from other lakes who have to leave their properties during holiday weekends because the large motor and jet ski noise is too much to bear.

  4. Weed eradication- As you are aware the Town with the assistance of the Moosup Pond Association, has successfully treated the Pond for Variable leaf Milfoil. The cost of which is upward of $ 20,000.00. The Moosup Pond Association donated $ 4,000.00 to the Town in 2010 for weed treatment. Our next venture is weed suction harvesting which will allow the suction of invasive weeds and mucky silt from the water bed. Large boats and jet skis churn up weed beds with wave action, spreading the weeds around the pond. This is counter productive.

  5. Fairness- Most of the property owners bought their properties after 1984, when the ordinance was adopted. These property owners did their research and found that Moosup Pond had a boat and motor restriction, so they bought here, knowing the law and willing to abide by it. But now some want to change the rules in the middle of the game.

  • Please join with over 90% of your neighbors and speak out against any changes to anyone who approaches you with a petiton.

       ATTENTION ALL COAST WATCHERS!!!

Be on the lookout for any invasive plants. On photo page #3 you will see small and large photos of eurasian milfoil amnd fanwort. Both are vey bad and have invaded area lakes and ponds, please see Norwich bulleting article about invasive weeds in Griwold's four lakes.click here for article  A few days ago, there was a meeting in Griswold about their weed problem in four of their lakes, Pachaug, Asland, Hopeville and Glasgo. They are infested with Fanwort eurasian milfoil. They have no association(s) and do not seem to have any way out of their problem because it is so bad.  They need a MILLION DOLLARS just for Pachaug because Fanwort is so expensive to treat.  We have to do everyting we can to keep Fanwort and Eurasian milfoil out  of Moosup Pond.  For a link to the second Norwich bulletin article click here for second article     Luckily we have started our invasive weed program and it looks good for 2010. We have about a 50% response to our donation program, and if you would like to donate please do so by sending in your donation to : Moosup Pond Association, P.O. box 513, Moosup Conn. 06354 If you see questionable plants, please call and we can send out one of our trained members to evaluate the situtation.
