THE 2010 WEED TREATMENT REPORT IS AVAILABLE.

The 2010 report is available to read or downlaod in PDF format by clicking here. You will see in the report over a 90 percent success in controlling the target plant, Variable Leaf Milfoil. That is great, but you must remember that there will be regrowth in the Spring of 2011. Also, keep in mind that we will never be totally rid of the invasive weed, we can only hope to control it over time.

This project would not have happened if not the cooperation of Town Hall. The Town of Plainfield has taken a keen interest in Moosup Pond over the years. Also, Lou Soja the inland wetlands officer has been a big help. The Association should also thank the Invasive Plant committee: Mike Donelly, Caryn Megin and Taso Balis.

Suction Harveting equipment has been purchased privately and was used for the first time in 2010.  Permission was granted from the Inland Wetlands commission to do suction harvesting of invasive plants .  This is very exciting as we can selectively target small areas of regrowth and also deal with some silt and muck issues.  Suction Harvesting is the cutting edge technology today for weed control.  Basically,  you take a suction pump and suck the weeds out of the pond into a containment bag that filters out the weedsand muck.  Then you can dispose of the weeds and muck. The process is slow and labor intensive but it works very well and is someting tha the association can do, so it cost is very low.

The herbicide that had been used is called NAVIGATE it is a 2,4-D systemic herbicide and it is targeted at the Variable Leaf milfoil only. It does not kill any fish and has been approved for use by the D.E.P. Check back frequently to this site for any updates. Info on boat and Motor restriction

The Plainfield police department and some concerned boat owners asked to have some clartiy to the boat and motor restictions of Moosup Pond. On September 26th, 1984 Town ordinance # 69 was encated. Section #1 as Follows:" No boat, watercraft or vessel, greater that eighteen (18) feet in length or equipped or propelled in full or in part with a motor in excess of ten (10) horsepower shall be launched, set afloat, or operated in Moosup Pond. The provision of this section relative to the size of the horsepower shall be inapplicable to waterfront property owners who own motors on the effective date of this Ordinance in excess of ten (10)horsepower. It is further provided that the provision of this section relative to the size of horsepower shall apply to any owner of waterfront property at Moosup Pond who sells or disposes of of said motor in excess of ten (10) horsepower or said waterfront property after the effective date of the Ordinance." So it looks like you #1- had to be waterfront property owner on 9-26-84 and still are to this day and #2- own the SAME MOTOR you owned on 9-26-84, to this day.
