Moosup Pond Association

P.O. Box 513

Moosup, Ct 06354

Dear Moosup Pond Area Neighbor:

How quickly a year has passed and it is time once again to either renew your membership or become a voting or associate member of the Moosup Pond Association.

We have a very exciting year planned in 2013 at Moosup Pond.  First and foremost, we are having an invasive weed treatment due in 2013.  This treatment is the first since 2010.  As you are aware, Dr. Mark June-Wells of the DEEP did a week-long survey and analysis of the pond.  He presented his findings at our annual meeting in 2012.

I am happy to say that we are now in a “caretaker of the eco-system” phase.  Dr. Wells was very happy with the control of the milfoil and the re-growth of many native species. Fish populations are good, with the food chain intact.

Also, the 2013 Day Kimball Hospital will be having it’s tri-athelon at Moosup Pond. You will be receiving an email about the event at the date draws closer.

I would like to state again that NOTHING gets done without the support of our members. It is the membership that provides us the means to do what we do.  So again, I ask for your continued support by either joining the Association or renewing your membership.  At $ 25.00 for a voting and $10.00 for associate membership, it’s cheap insurance against the huge costs that now plague many neighboring lakes and ponds.

So please, take a moment and send in your payment to the address above, and let’s keep the ball rolling. As a reminder the deadline for remittance is May 1st, 2013.

Thanks so much for standing up and doing your part.

                                            Jeffrey Megin, President

New Ordianance for Moosup Pond,  vote May 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. at  Town Hall

One waterfront property owner has mounted a legal challenge to the 1984 Oridiance, he is challenging the "grandfather clause". If he is sucessful, therre will be nothing to stand in the way of large boats, motors, and Jet Skis.    You know how hard we have worked to stop the spread of invasive weeds and to clean up the Pond and it's environs.

Please support the new ordinance as it will:

  1.    preserve the health of the pond for the next 30 years
  2.    prevent the spread of invasive weeds from area lakes with an boat and trailer inspection prior to launch.
  3.    prohibits the use of JET SKIS
  4.    preserves the Town beach for residents' use
  5.    prevents  the spread of FANWORT and EURASIAN MILFOIL which are very costly to treat ( $ 1,000.00 per acre) and who's going to pay for that??

So please , come to Town Hall on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00 p.m. and vote in favor of the new ordinance.  The ordinance is supported by the Board of Selectmen and the Moosup Pond Association.   This is the most important vote of  the next 30 years.

Be on the lookout for any invasive plants. On photo page #3 you will see small and large photos of eurasian milfoil amnd fanwort. Both are vey bad and have invaded area lakes and ponds, please see Norwich bulleting article about invasive weeds in Griwold's four lakes.click here for article  A few days ago, there was a meeting in Griswold about their weed problem in four of their lakes, Pachaug, Asland, Hopeville and Glasgo. They are infested with Fanwort eurasian milfoil. They have no association(s) and do not seem to have any way out of their problem because it is so bad.  They need a MILLION DOLLARS just for Pachaug because Fanwort is so expensive to treat.  We have to do everyting we can to keep Fanwort and Eurasian milfoil out  of Moosup Pond.  For a link to the second Norwich bulletin article click here for second article . Also, Zebra Mussles have made their debut in Connecticut in both Candelwood Lake and Lake Zoar. Zebra Mussles are very bad and we need to be on the lookout for them.  There is a very informative article that you can read, just click the following link:Zebra Mussel report     Luckily we have started our invasive weed program and it looks good for 2010. We have about a 50% response to our donation program, and if you would like to donate please do so by sending in your donation to : Moosup Pond Association, P.O. box 513, Moosup Conn. 06354 If you see questionable plants, please call and we can send out one of our trained members to evaluate the situtation.
